On April 24 the UN special rapporteur (UNSR) Asma Jahangir has denounced a report published by the Iranian News Agency (IRNA) alleging that she was planning to undertake a visit to Saudi Arabia in order to defame the authorities in Tehran. This attack on the UN SR shows the length the clerical regime in Iran will go to cover up their human rights abuses towards their own people.
The most pressing violation at this time is that of the human rights activist Atena Daemi, she is on her 17th day of hunger strike and she is in critical condition.
Atena Daemi was sentenced to seven years in jail on unsubstantial charges of assembly, collusion and propaganda against the regime, blasphemy and insulting Khamenei, and concealing evidence of a crime.
Human rights organizations and groups, however, say that the reasons for Atenas conviction are her postings on Facebook and paintings on the walls criticizing death penalty, visiting gravesites of those killed during the protests following the 2009 presidential election, and reporting on the situation of political prisoners.
One other pressing human rights violation is that on Sunday morning, April 23, henchmen raided Section 4, Hall 12 of Gohardasht prison in Karaj and transferred political prisoner Mohammad Ali Mansouri to an unknown location. He was a political prisoner in the 80s and a family member of Mojahedin. He suffers from various diseases such as hepatitis and gastrointestinal diseases and most of the time has been deprived of necessary medical treatment and care.
A third pressing human rights violation is that of
Maryam Akbari Monfared According to reports, Ms. Maryam Akbari is experiencing intense pain in the knee joints and feet as she is denied medical treatment and Evin prison officials despite awareness about her pain and physical condition, refuse to send her to the hospital or medical centers for treatment.
These are unfortunately not the only cases of human rights violations in Iran, there are thousands of political prisoners and human rights activists that are imprisoned on bogus charges. And they are abused in different ways, mostly they are deprived of urgent medical treatment, some have been deprived of having family visits others are deprived of hot water or heat. The list of violations is long and grim. The upcoming presidential election has made the regime weary of any protests or uprising so they have used public executions to silence the people.
The big problem for the regime at this time is that the world has trough social media on the internet become aware of the enormous human rights violations that are taking place in Iran, not only inside prison walls but also in the social life of Iranian women. And the worlds different human rights organizations are starting to put demands on the Iranian regime. The regime is facing many problems at this point such as the new sanctions from the new administration in the US and the rivalry within the regime itself, the different fractions in the
regime weakens the government at a point where weakness will be fatal and therefore the regime is escalating the human rights abuses.
Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran, Asma Jahangir |
There are many examples of abuses that the regime denies happens. There is not without reason the regime is denying the UNSR to visit Iran and investigate abuse allegations herself. The rise of internet social media has made the evidence easy to access and the videos and pictures leave no doubt that the allegations are the truth.
