The latest unofficial numbers from Iran suggests that approximately 276, 000 underaged girls got married and 109,000 teenagers gave birth in Iran in the past year. To find confirmed statistics is proven to be very difficult indeed. A lot of families in the rural areas of Iran fails to report underage marriages or they alter the girl's age to avoid problems. One of the issues that are causing this rise in underage marriages is the rising poverty in Iran, the parents are no longer capable to provide for their children and the only solution is to marry the girls off.
Child marriage in Iran

The result of this trend is a rise in teenage mothers and complications during child birth, the complications are related to the fact that the girl is no more than an under developed child her self when she gives birth. According to Iranian law, a man can consummate the marriage if his «wife» is 9 years old. This is after western laws pedophilia and is the worst violation of a child’s rights. We can refer to this as lost childhood, they are forced to become adults at the age of 9.   consummate the marriage if his «wife» is 9 years old. This is after western laws pedophilia and is the worst violation of a child’s rights. We can refer to this as lost childhood, they are forced to become adults at the age of 9.

Iran has, in fact, ratified the law that set the marital age of girls to 18 years, they have also committed to protect and respect children’s rights. As a chilling addition to the legality of child marriage, this also means that a girl at the age of 9 can be sentenced to death because she is considered an adult.  The violations against children’s rights are not decreasing in Iran but are in fact increasing. The Iranian regime is to blame for this trend, they have failed when it comes to eradicating poverty, and the regime has not paid any attention to the increase of child marriages, the regime has in fact encouraged child marriage by stating officially that girls preferred age for marriage is 9.
The Civil Code adopted in 1982 and reformed in 2002, set the age of marriage for girls at 13.

According to Tayyebeh Siavoshi, a member of the mullah’s Parliament (Majlis) at least 2000 girls in Iran have undergone repeated miscarriages and will soon become young widows. These girls go through child marriages and turn into young widows. Children between 13 and 14 years old become both widows and head of household. These child brides get immediately pregnant within a year after they get married and because their bodies are still that of a child they suffer miscarriages. These girls are small children themselves and they face a higher risk of complications even risk death in childbirth. Some of these children are forced to marry old men, sometimes the age difference is 30 years and the girls are forced into these marriages.

The only way to put an end to this trend is to end poverty and to change the tradition that legalizes child marriage, the whole social structure must change and the only way to do that is to overthrow the current regime and the status of women must become equal to that of men.  The Iranian resistance has set 18 years as the legal age for girls to get married. the resistance also says that women will be equal to men in their society. Therefore the NCRI is the only political opposition that can better livelihood for girls and women in Iran.
